- news · 2023-06 — Woodall's Campground Magazine reports the National Park Service determined in May 2023 that elements of the roughly $40 million Camp FIMFO redevelopment of the Kittatinny campground in Barryville fundamentally conflict with the Upper Delaware River Management Plan, even after the Upper Delaware Council approved the project 6-4 on Sept. 1, 2022. Trade coverage describes the applicant as Northgate Resorts/Sun Communities (Sun acquired the Kittatinny real-estate portfolio in December 2020; Northgate operates the property), and local groups have organized against the plan, which would replace tent sites with 252 permanently installed park-model RVs. Themes: governance, management - news — Woodall's reports the Camp FIMFO environmental impact statement moving through Town of Highland review, with public, National Park Service and Upper Delaware Council comments; the project description notes a modern septic system would replace the current deteriorating system at the Barryville base. Themes: governance, utilities - other — A longtime returning family alleges on Tripadvisor that quiet hours went unenforced at the Barryville campground, that neighboring campers threatened them when asked to lower their voices, that bathrooms were dirty and not cleaned, and that the office only offered to talk to the offenders; the family says they left a day early after coming for 20 years. The review dates from the COVID period, around the transition from Jones-family ownership to Northgate operation under Sun's real-estate ownership. Original source
